  • Craig Coussins, UK, A testimonial from Craig Coussins: Bonsai Master UK.

I first met Jeff Carr when I was asked to work on restoring a collection of old Bonsai in a public Garden. Jeff
had been into Bonsai for some time and during the week while we were working on the trees I passed as much
information to him from my own 40 years of Bonsai experience.  Over the next couple of years I saw Jeff grow,
both as an enthusiast for Bonsai and as a teacher of Bonsai.

It is the sign of a true Bonsai teacher when that person is still able to take instruction and advice from another
of his peers. We are always learning and that process does not stop although we teach.

I watched Jeff in his  workshops and I was very pleased to see that his delivery is very thorough and his clarity
in explaining bonsai techniques to his students without exception. His workshop students truly enjoy his
teaching and that is the mark of someone who cares about what they do and what they are teaching.

These days I enjoy coaching young masters and on a recent trip to Jeff's Staselwood Nursery I spent some time with him on speciality
techniques and advanced styling. In turn I will sit in classes from other masters and learn from them. To be a good teacher you have to be a
good student. No one knows everything. A true master shares knowledge and does not tell you. I try to follow this credo: Do not tell me what
you can do, show me what you can do and if you are able to do that for me then share that knowledge with your heart.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Jeff Carr as a teacher, workshop leader and demonstration artist to any Bonsai group in
    America.

Bonsai is indeed an art and Ohio is lucky to have Jeff Carr.

I’ve known Jeff Carr for about 3 years now and in those 3 years he’s taught me a ton about Bonsai. I’ve
always been interested in bonsai and had a few trees here and there, but never really got into it like I
wanted. After visiting Jeff’s greenhouse and seeing his collection of trees. It inspired me to take the
hobby/lifestyle of bonsai more seriously. Now a hundred or so trees later here I am, Vice President of
the local bonsai club. I’m also in the process of building my own greenhouse, with Jeff’s help and
    guidance.

Jeff has to be one of the most dependable, reliable, hard-working, conscientious and honest guys you’ll
ever meet.  He’s a good friend and teacher.

“How lucky I am to have Staselwood Bonsai only ten minutes away from my home…I’ve been going to
Jeff for almost a year now for all of my bonsai needs. He has everything I need, supplies, trees, the
knowledge, and the experience, and all at reasonable prices. His Staselwood Bonsai Soil Mix is the best
I have found for my trees in central Ohio.

    Thanks Jeff!”

Jeff Carr and his colleague, Jason Treadway, spoke at our annual Master
Gardener Volunteer Recognition Dinner in 2006. His enthusiasm for the art
of bonsai is contagious and his presentation gave a lot of good illustrations
and answered many questions. We have invited him back for a workshop in
April of 2007 and plan to have a large attendance.

----I had the pleasure of working with Jeff, organizing a workshop for our club's novice group.  Jeff used a multitude of teaching styles to convey
the concepts of shaping a bonsai using wire and other methods.  Group members had close up and hands on experiences in the restyling of a
mature specimen.  The explanations of process and techniques were thorough but easily understood.
The most high praise that I can offer is that Jeff is  an educator.

----I thought Jeff's workshop was great. These are the points I got from it that I wasn't
aware of prior to.
-emphasis on wiring ALL branches at once
    -finishing wiring before shaping
-wiring technique to minimize bark damage (using hand to support wire)
-technique for more extreme bends in branches (using petwrap etc.)
-reducing "legginess" not by cutting back branches but by bending them
       -Paul

----Please tell Jeff his workshop was great and I feel I learned a lot.  I wish it could have
been longer.

----While I had read about most of the techniques Jeff used in his wiring I had not seen some of them actually performed before.  I especially liked
the information about the PetFlex and have already passed it along to the members of the Cox Arboretum Bonsai Club.
I just wish we would have had more time for the workshop.

----I think this was the first time that I began to understand how to wire.   What I liked the most was that Jeff could do more than tell you how to do
it.   He could translate the technique back to the impact on the tree's physiology.   I am a visual thinker and have been progressing by looking into
the tree's energy flow.   I am not very good at it yet but Jeff tied into that point of understanding.  It was a great help to me to know that we don't
cross wires ---  not because of aesthetics but because it applies double physical pressure to a single spot when we are bending the branch.   The
physics / physiology tie is a winner for me.
Thank Jeff for a great session.

----It was great!!  Would have loved a lot more time!

Thanks to all!

Jeff
